Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any equipment or gear I need to bring?
If you show up with weather and location-appropriate clothing and a good pair of hiking boots, you pretty much have it covered! Be sure to bring plenty of sun screen, lip balm and bug spray since you will be outdoors during most of your APO Experience. We will provide all other equipment and gear required to have the most enjoyable shooting experience of your life!
I don't really have a firearms background - is an APO Experience for me?
Actually this is perhaps the best overall introduction to learn and experience long range rifle shooting. Our professional staff of competitive shooters, military instructors and shooting experts have the demonstrated ability of coaching advanced users in improving their skills as well as ensuring that even the most novice shooter hits targets at ranges of more than a mile! Whether new to rifle sports or an avid, long-time shooter - our staff puts you front and center in your APO Experience.
Are APO Experiences and Training Courses women-friendly?
Most definitely! Here at APO we have a long history of supporting women in the world of rifle sports including competitive shooting. Several of our RifleSports Experiences each year include women instructors and competitive shooters. Ladies, let us make this an exciting, empowering and memorable experience for you, your personal circle of friends and professional colleagues!
What are the age requirements?
All our guests must be 21 years of age to participate in either an APO Experience or our Precision Rifle Training. Younger guests can be accommodated on a Custom Experience.
How many guests can attend an individual APO Experience?
We prefer to keep our groups small to ensure we spend quality time behind the rifles with each guest. The average group is 12 to 15, but we can comfortably accommodate up to 20 guests. We provide instructors of no greater a ratio than 1 instructor per 5 guests. Should you, or a small intimate group of friends or colleagues, be looking for a private APO Experience, we are ready to tailor a Custom Experience to meet your needs.
What are the physical demands and limitations?
We strive to ensure your APO Experience is an enjoyable, relaxing respite outdoors where you can achieve your personal marksmanship best. There will be only a moderate amount of walking at any APO Experience location. Transportation while in the field is always provided to maximize your time "behind the gun", minimize walking and hiking distances, and facilitate the movement of associated gear.
Whether you are more comfortable firing from a shooting bench, lying prone on a padded shooting mat, or sitting on the ground with your rifle supported from a tripod, our instructors will always help you find your most comfortable and safest shooting position.
Please note that our Escalante Mountain Experience in Utah is at an average elevation of 9,500 feet above sea level. Consequently, for this particular Experience you should be in good health with no serious cardiac history. Please contact us for further information.
What guns will I have the opportunity to shoot?
In your hands will be placed some of the world’s finest long-range, bolt-action precision rifles in the world! You will shoot calibers to include .300 Whisper/Blackout, .223 Remington, .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, .300 Winchester Magnum, .338 Norma Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum. You will also have the opportunity to "get behind" the incomparable .375 CheyTac Super Magnum and the powerful .50BMG! At the Escalante Mountain Experience in Utah, the focus will be more on the magnum and super magnum calibers capable of reaching targets at ultra-long ranges. If you have a particular caliber in mind which isn't a part of our standard Experience, we invite you to contact our Concierge Services and we will do everything we can to accommodate your request.
To provide our guests with the most comfort while "behind the gun", all our precision rifles are sound-suppressed. You will also have the chance to shoot suppressed HK and Glock pistols equipped with customized "red-dot" sights to ensure your accuracy is spot-on!
What brands of equipment will I be using while "in the field"?
Your full-spectrum APO Experience will feature only the finest brands and highest quality products. All rifles come from our own premium line of precision equipment. You'll experience the Asymmetric Warrior® rifle, the Tactical Competition Rifle, the SuperSport line as well as the SABER® Precision Rifle. Your Experience will have a balance of calibers from .223 to .50BMG. At the Escalante Mountains Experience in Utah, the focus will be more on the magnum and super magnum calibers capable of reaching targets at extreme-long ranges.
You will find only the world's best optics mounted on your rifles. These include the American made, Leupold brand as well as the European brands, Schmidt Bender and Nightforce. All ammunition used throughout your Experience will be of the highest quality, specifically engineered for use in competition to include the Hornady and RUAG brands. You'll also use Vectronix night vision and laser range finders.
At one point during your Experience, you'll be firing Glock and Heckler & Koch pistols, each custom mounted through our own APO Custom Shop with high-end Trijicon RMR "red-dot" sights to ensure maximum accuracy when engaging your targets.
With so much weapons fire, isn't the noise excessive?
All of the weapons used in your Experience will be equipped with the finest quality sound suppressors built by AAC and Elite Iron. Contrary to popular belief, noise is never completely "silenced" with any sound suppressor, but it is significantly reduced. You will also be provided hearing protection while "in the field" which allows normal conversation with your coaching team and other guests, but increases hearing protection. This combination assures complete comfort for even our most sound-sensitive guests.
How abusive is the recoil when firing these high-end rifles?
All firearms have some recoil when fired. Through a combination of APO's fully adjustable, superior rifle chassis systems, learning correct weapon firing positions from our trained specialists, and a muzzle brake on each rifle, "felt-recoil" is greatly reduced. You can be assured that you will feel comfortable shooting all day long and easily be ready to shoot again the next day without hesitation!
